Case Study: Unplugs: Click Earplugs That Give You Total Sound Control
TW Enterprises is a US company that specializes in innovative and well-designed technical solutions involving audio.
Concertgoers, music listeners, students, and the general headphone-wearing public are looking for a balance between the ability to hear the world around them while using earplugs, and the ability to still adequately protect their hearing. With this in mind, TW developed the Unplugs, designed to provide both functionalities with a click.
Our Approach
The challenge was to design a pair of earplugs that not only provides the user with the ability to hear something important but also provides the total hearing protection in loud environments that normal earplugs provide- and something that looks like a high-end pair of earbuds, as opposed to looking like foam earplugs.
The result is the Unplugs, which aim to solve both these problems conveniently for the user. The secret is the dual setting, designed to allow the user to easily "click" between transparency mode, allowing normal sound, and a protection mode. TW developed the earplugs around five key design elements:
Superior Sound Frequency Coverage: Unplugs are engineered to provide protection across a wider range of sound frequencies than normal earbuds, and provide better protection than NO earplugs even when not in protection mode. This helps protect your hearing even when the plugs are being used in transparency mode.
Innovative triangular shape: The Unplugs are made to fit your ears. They feature an ergonomic shape that fits comfortably into the ear canal even during long use, without any discomfort.
Clearly-defined left and right plugs: The Unplugs are clearly marked for your left and right ears, so you always have a plug that's made to fit your ear.
Unique colorways: The Unplugs also come in four unique colorway options, with your choice of Iridescent, black, silver, and nude shades.
Unique case design: Like high-end earbuds, the Unplugs also come in a stylish carrying case that features a mirror-finish design with a carabiner for easy attachment and a magnetic seal for the cover.

THE RESULTS
The TW Enterprises Unplugs Kickstarter video campaign was sleek and well-crafted, showing all the different environments the plugs are useful in. Backers tended to have questions about different variants, as well as precise decibel protection levels. Overall, the feedback was very inquisitive on this product, with backers excited to try the plugs out for themselves.
