THE BACKGROUND
Case Study: The BARE Dutch Oven
BARE Cookware is a Dutch company based in Rotterdam that creates products aimed at providing solutions to common cooking problems, as well as innovative new variants on mainstay kitchen essentials.
The Dutch Oven is a classic standby in Western kitchens- a classic all-purpose cookery vessel that's as renowned for baking as it is for slow-cooking, searing, braising, etc. However, the Dutch has its drawbacks. It's bulky and heavy, as well as prone to chipping if damaged, and it heats unevenly.
Our Approach
The challenge was to design a Dutch Oven that not only improved on the strengths of the classic Dutch Oven in terms of performance and kitchen versatility, but also improved on all the drawbacks as well, such as weight and ease of damaging.
The result is the BARE Dutch Oven, which aims to reinvent the classic Dutch Oven from a blank sheet. The secret is the two-ply construction of the pot, with a stainless steel interior and a thick aluminum exterior. BARE Cookware developed the pot around six key design elements:
Chip-free interior: The BARE Dutch Oven features a high-grade stainless steel interior which won't chip like the traditional enamel-coated cast iron would, plus it heats evenly and deglazes easily so your food won't stick.
Hot spot-free material: The BARE Dutch Oven features an exterior of durable aluminum, which is significantly lighter than cast iron yet conducts heat just as efficiently and evenly, if not more so.
Heat storage technology: The aluminum exterior of the BARE Dutch Oven retains heat more efficiently per kilogram than cast iron and keeps cooking temperatures just as steady, meaning that you get the same level of heat retention at a much lower weight. The BARE Dutch Oven's construction allows it to be a fraction of the weight of a traditional Dutch Oven- more than 40% lighter, in fact. One classic Dutch Oven outweighs TWO of the BARE Dutch Oven.
Does it all: The hallmark of the classic Dutch Oven is its versatility in the kitchen, and the BARE Dutch Oven is no different. It moves seamlessly (and much more easily) from the stovetop to the oven, and the heavy lid retains moisture to replicate the effect of professional kitchen ovens.
Works on all heat sources: Unlike traditional Dutch Ovens, which were designed well before induction cooktops, the BARE Dutch Oven is designed to work just as well on any heating source- induction, gas, electric, and ceramic. It's also oven-safe up to 260 °C / 500 °F.
Easy to maintain: The BARE Dutch Oven is made to last a lifetime, and the simplicity of its design, free from PFAS or other nonstick chemical additives, means you never have to worry about scratching or damaging the interior and about what the pot might be putting into your food. No maintenance is required and it can be put directly into the dishwasher after use.

THE RESULTS
The BARE Cookware BARE Dutch Oven's Kickstarter video campaign was polished and well-made, showing off the extreme durability, lightness and versatility of the pot, with backers showing their appreciation at the simplicity of the design. Some had questions about the heat retention capabilities, as well as questions about things like use over open flames or dimensions of the lid or base. Overall, the feedback was very positive on this product.
