THE BACKGROUND
Case Study: soundcore Sleep A30: The First Smart ANC Sleep Earbuds
soundcore is the audio arm of US charging tech company company Anker, and is a California-based company specializing in innovative audio technology.
Nearly half of all adults worldwide don't get adequate sleep, with millions averaging no more than 3 nights of quality sleep per week. soundcore sought to make a product that could help address some of the factors behind this negative trend.
soundcore sought to create a design that would address some of the biggest issues with using earplugs while sleeping- earplugs that may fit comfortably but don't provide adequate sound blocking (or vice-versa), as well as most earplugs not fitting comfortably when side-sleeping. From these efforts came the Sleep A30 earbuds!
Our Approach
soundcore sought to replace traditional earplugs for sleep use altogether with dynamic, AI-enhanced earbuds, ones that are comfortable to wear and only become more comfortable as they adapt.
The result is the Sleep A30 earbuds, which are engineered precisely for sleep and creating the most restful audio-based conditions possible for the user. These earbuds were crafted around these eight key featural elements:
Smart Active Noise Cancellation: The Sleep A30 earbuds are equipped with smart tech that actively detects and blocks low-frequency sounds in the sleep environment, allowing for better sleep. Additionally, the ANC adapts to the unique shape of any user's ear canal, allowing for a superior seal and improved noise cancellation with long-term use.
3-stage Snore Masking System: The snore-tracking case monitors snoring sounds in real time while the earbuds are inside, then automatically tunes and adjusts the masking audio for optimal results. Additionally, the user can select from a library of different snore-masking audios from their mobile device using the app. The adaptive AI can also generate binaural calming patters of beats to each ear of different frequencies, allowing the user to fall asleep more easily.

Comfort while side-sleeping: Unlike traditional earplugs that can press painfully into the eardrum while side-sleeping, or become dislodged from the ears and fall out as the user changes head positions, the Sleep A30 earbuds are designed to contour with the edge of the ear canal and remain comfortably in the user's ears all night long. They are also made of soft silicone, to put as little physical impact on the eardrums and ear canal as possible.
Long Battery Life: The Sleep A30 earbuds provide 9 hours of use on a full charge if the ANC is used constantly all night long. If the ANC is enabled to shut off when sleeping is detected, the earbuds can provide 5 nights of battery life.
Full customization through the app: The Sleep A30s can be extensively customized to the user's liking using the app, from which alarms can be set, sleep reports can be accessed, audios can be selected, etc.
Sound Library: The sleep audio library for the Sleep A30 earbuds is extensive, and provides a wide range of colored noise and natural sounds and soft music to create an ideal soundscape for sleeping.
Find Device: The app can also be used to help you find both Sleep A30s if they go missing, by making them play a sound that will be easy to hear.

THE RESULTS
The Kickstarter video was thoughtfully well-crafted, with especially good use of graphics to show the components of the earbuds, from the tech inside to the design. The designers thoroughly explain their reasoning for each featural choice as well, which was appreciated. There were questions from backers about the different tip options (standard silicone or memory foam, as well as some expressing concerns over some issues with the Early Bird rewards. Another backer had a question about how well the earbuds stay in the ears, which was well-answered by other users. Overall, there was a lot of buzz generated by this campaign.
