THE BACKGROUND
Case Study: RUX Waterproof Tote Bag
RUX is a Canadian design team who create rugged and innovative storage and carrying dear, designed to fit together and complement each other to make the user's outdoor experience that much more convenient and comfortable.
Knowing what kind of bag to take with you in your daily life can be a challenge. What sort of bag do you bring? And should it be a bag that maximizes organization, durability, or protection for what you might be carrying that day?
RUX aimed to create a better-designed bag that combines all those functions. Their solution is an all-purpose, everyday tote bag that allows you to carry daily items or special items for an outdoor hike or traveling, and is suitable in all weather types. The design secret for this is the roll top that allows items inside to stay dry at all times if needed, while also allowing the bag to just be used as an open-top tote bag as well.
Our Approach
RUX wanted a bag that addressed multiple common user concerns, without sacrificing on construction quality or material quality.
The resulting Waterproof Tote Bag makes use of simple yet innovative design elements, with a focus on these six specific ones:
Convertible Design: The Waterproof Tote Bag is designed to be a fully convertible carry system in one, built to allow the user to shift seamlessly between the open top and roll-top style.
Easy Packing: The Waterproof Tote Bag is well-structured, allowing the bag to freely stand on its own to make for easier packing. It retains its boxy shape for ease of access and has two "dump pockets", one internal and one external, for quickly storing things when the user is in a hurry.
Carry Options: The Waterproof Tote Bag has durable, reinforced grab handles for the hand, as well as for the shoulder. The straps are padded with a silicone grip.
Lash System: The innovative lash system gives the Waterproof Tote Bag even greater carrying capacity, as well as giving the user even more peace of mind. The durable 360-degree loops around the bag allow the bag to be secured to a vehicle while on the go, or for securing something large (like a skateboard) to the exterior of the bag.
Materials and Build Quality: The Waterproof Tote Bag makes use of bonded seams, which makes the bad seam-free and leakproof as a result. The double-coated roll top is smooth and flexible for an easier time rolling it than with other roll-top bags. Both the interior and exterior are double-coated for maximum weatherproofing and durability.
System Integration: The Waterproof Tote Bag makes use of an entire RUX carry system that fits together with the bag as additional accessories, with everything modular and made to fit together perfectly.

THE RESULTS
The Kickstarter campaign video was well-made, with lots of testimony from designers and on-location footage from the rugged mountains of Alberta, Canada (where the company is based) showing the bag being used in different conditions for different activities. There were notably questions from the backers on adding particular accessories, as well as a lot of positive testimony towards RUX. Overall, backers seemed very interested and were eagerly anticipating this one.
