THE BACKGROUND

Notebooks are timeless, but they’ve also always been disposable. Rocketbook sought to change that with the Everlast Notebook, a reusable smart notebook that combines the tactile satisfaction of pen-and-paper with the organisational power of the digital age. Launched on Kickstarter in late 2016, the Everlast wasn’t just another stationery product - it was positioned as a greener, more enduring way to write, sketch, plan, and capture ideas.

What set it apart wasn’t just the novelty of reuse, but how the aspect of reuse worked: pages made from a sleek waterproof synthetic blend could be wiped clean with a moist cloth after writing with standard Pilot FriXion pens, meaning the notebook could be rewritten over and over again without using new paper. At the same time, every page was designed to work seamlessly with the free Rocketbook app, which uses image capture and smart symbols to send handwritten notes to cloud services like Google Drive, Dropbox, Evernote and more.

The campaign came at a time when professionals, students, and creators alike were seeking tools that honoured analogue creativity while embracing digital organisation - and Everlast promised the best of both worlds.

THE APPROACH

Rocketbook didn’t just introduce a new notebook; they crafted a system that elegantly bridged physical writing and digital workflow. The innovation lay in balancing a traditional tactile experience with modern connectivity. Instead of forcing users to adjust to touchscreen keyboards or expensive proprietary pens, Everlast keeps the familiar feel of pen and paper front and centre. By pairing with everyday Pilot FriXion gel pens, easily available in stores worldwide, the notebook lowers barriers to adoption while enhancing usability.

Each Everlast page features a subtle dot grid pattern ideal for notes, sketches, diagrams or lists, and a set of smart symbols at the bottom. These symbols act as shortcuts: when marked before scanning, they instruct the Rocketbook app where to send content - whether to a cloud drive, email, or project folder. The app’s intelligent image capture processes pages quickly and accurately, organising them as if you’d typed them into your device yourself.

Pages even include QR codes that help the app keep scans in order, ensuring that digital copies reflect the physical notebook’s structure. What could have been a gimmick instead became a thoughtful fusion of form and function - one that feels familiar and forward-looking.

Rocketbook’s approach wasn’t about replacing paper, but elevating it: giving creators a tool that adapts to workflows without creating waste, friction, or complexity.

THE RESULTS

Backers weren’t just drawn to a reusable notebook - they backed a system that promised endless pages and effortless digital organisation. Reviews from long-term users highlight how the notebook holds up through everyday use, with many still using their Everlast years after the campaign ended, a testament to its durability and appeal.

At the same time, community feedback points out trade-offs inherent in the design. Because the pages are a specialised synthetic material, ink can take time to dry fully, leading to occasional smudging if handled too soon. Left-handed users and heavy note-takers sometimes find this challenging, and over-extended heavy use, some pages show signs of wear after many cycles of writing and wiping. Others noted that their notebook was never delivered to them, or that it was available online for cheaper before their product was shipped to them.

Even so, for many Everlast owners, the notebook lives up to its name - not preserved forever in perfect condition, but usefully reusable in a way traditional notebooks could never be. Users appreciate that the notebook reduces paper waste, keeps all notes in one reusable place, and integrates seamlessly with cloud storage - all while preserving the joy of pen-to-paper creativity.

The Rocketbook Everlast campaign teaches that innovation doesn’t always need radical tech; sometimes it’s about reimagining the everyday. By respecting the physical tradition of notebooks while layering in smart digital features, Rocketbook created a tool that feels both familiar and revolutionary. For creators and campaigners alike, the lesson is timeless: build something that respects the user’s habits, enhances their workflow, and bridges worlds (physical and digital) rather than forcing them to abandon one for the other.
