THE BACKGROUND
Case Study: ProTimer P2 – Your Daily Companion for Deep Work & Balance
Thomas is the moniker of a Hong Kong-based designer who believes that innovative and simplistic design can greatly improve daily life. This is his second successful Kickstarter campaign.
Focus can be a struggle while working, particularly on tasks you may find boring, tedious, or unpleasant. This problem can be made worse by the nature of our modern & technology-driven world, which is rife with distractions. Thomas and his design team sought to create a timer that eschews the conventions of any traditional analog timer or mobile device-based timer and is instead designed to operate around the "Pomodoro Technique"- A workflow technique in which intervals of dedicated work on a task broken up with intermittent breaks to refocus the mind.
The team wanted to create a device that's simple, soothing, and aesthetically pleasing to use, to better ease the user into this method for completing tasks. The result is the ProTimer P2.
Our Approach
The design team sought to replace traditional timers not only for their jarring, loud and stress-inducing sounds, but also to create a timer designed specifically for the Pomodoro Technique.
The ProTimer P2 boasts a soft, relaxing and focusing gong sound, created with the use of a metal "singing bowl" and a pendulum that strikes it when the time elapses. The design of the timer is very minimalist, with little more than the bowl, pendulum and stand component, with its high-res digital display for selecting settings on the top of the stand. The bowl doubles as a control dial, with the user rotating it to select menu settings.
The ProTimer P2 was crafted specifically around six design elements:
Every detail, with purpose: The ProTimer P2 is a product with design at the very heart of its marketing point. Thomas believes that a product that's designed in a way to appeal to users through simplicity and aesthetic pleasingness will encourage its own use. This is especially beneficial in a product that encourages the user to form positive habits, like this one does.
Silence the Noise. Start Focusing: The ProTimer P2 is deliberately designed to disengage the user from the distractions of tech, so there is no phone app. In this way, the timer provides the ease of reading of a high-res display screen for the top, with analogue controls to mindfully keep the user focuses. Requiring a pickup of he user's phone can invite distractions and allow the user to get sidetracked from the task at hand.
The wood used in the Protimer P2: The timer's base/stand is made from sustainable walnut wood, chosen for its flowing, pleasing grain and patterns.
The golden metal brass singing bowl at the heart of the ProTimer P2: Inspired by the "singing bowls" used by monks to support meditation, the timer's bowl is crafted from brass. The wooden stand ensures each ring remains pure and undisturbed.
ProTimer P2 is more than a productivity tool: The advanced tech hidden within the digital display remains hidden at the top of the base, ready when you need it, but otherwise dark to prevent spoiling the aesthetic of the stand.
Designed for long sessions: The timer's battery provides 5-9 days of use, and is built to last for 10 years.

THE RESULTS
The Kickstarter video was nice and fit the calming aesthetic of the product, with Thomas explaining his design choices, as well as a simple overhead view of the product being used, with settings being selected. There were questions from backers about the construction and battery life of the product, as well as comments expressing appreciation for the product's mindful sustainability. Overall, backers appreciated Thomas' detailed answers to questions and there was a lot of buzz generated by this campaign.
