THE BACKGROUND

Case Study: Porthole Lantern by Oceanus Brass

Oceanus Brass is a US company based in Massachusetts, founded by craftswoman Victoria Warren, that creates timelessly rugged tools that are designed to perform as beautifully as they look.

A lantern is an essential item while in the wilderness or at sea, yet they aren't always as reliable as they should be. Plus, they easily can break. Oceanus Brass wanted to solve this problem by creating a rugged, portable, go-anywhere kind of lantern, one richly imbued with an old-fashioned nautical design language and aesthetic. And one that could always reliably provide lasting light with the flick of a thumb.

The product they came up with is the Porthole Lantern.

Our Approach

The challenge for Oceanus Brass was to design a lantern that also had the functions of a lighter, another essential survivalist item. And it needed to be more durable than the average lighter as well.

The result is the Porthole Lantern, which makes use of a bow shackle attachment point that not only looks great, but provides a strong functional attachment point, so you can hang the lantern or attach it to a lanyard. It also allows the lantern to stand securely upright while the flame is lit. The Porthole Lantern was crafted around these five key design elements:

  • Timeless Clipper inspiration: The Porthole Lantern takes design cues from the nautical aesthetic of 19th Century clipper ships, with a porthole shape- An iconic shape onboard any sailing ship. It also fits comfortably in the hand as well.

  • Machined construction: The Porthole Lantern is machined from a block of solid brass, making it about as durable and well-engineered as possible. Furthermore, the moving part seams that do exist are precisely aligned and combined with rubber gaskets to ensure waterproof and weatherproof reliability.

  • Dependable Light: With a reinforced spark mechanism and wicks/flints that are easy to replace, the user can expect sheer dependability.

  • Brass Cap: One notable element of the Porthole Lantern is the tethered brass cap, which screws into the top of the ignition chamber to provide yet more protection from the elements for the piece when not in use.

  • Integrated bow-shackle: In keeping with the design aesthetic of the piece, the integrated bow-shackle provides a handy & tough attachment point, as well as a point to allow the Porthole Lantern to stand up while continuously lit.

THE RESULTS

The Oceanus Brass Porthole Lantern's Kickstarter highly stylized video campaign shows the lantern being used in nautical settings and is explained in detail. Backers had questions about the cap, since that was a more recent addition to the design as requested by backers. Overall, backers seemed very anxious for this product to be shipped to them.
