Case Study: Nuttii x Timemore
Nuttii are a Singapore-based designing and engineering team whose work revolves around coffee. Their passion is bringing the pleasure of barista-quality coffee to more people in more places with sleek, innovative, and portable designs.
Espresso is changing, becoming more and more accessible to the masses outside of coffeehouses. Making a shot of espresso is also easier than ever before as well, with the innovation of espresso pods. As barista-quality coffee and espresso makers find their way into more and more homes, coffee drinkers will want to bring the fresh & full-bodied espresso experience with them wherever they go.
Nuttii sought to create a highly portable espresso maker that allows for espresso to be made and enjoyed on the go. The solution is a small cylindrical machine, the E-Coffee. With a built-in battery and water heating element, it can brew espresso with either an espresso pod (ideal for maximum convenience, in a setting like outdoors while camping), or traditionally using fine-ground coffee and a tamper (ideal for use in a hotel room or B&B, or at the office desk). It also takes up no more space than a travel mug.
Our Approach
Nuttii wanted to create a machine that had all the power and capability of a home or coffeehouse espresso machine, but with total lightweight portability and durability so it can be taken on the go without sacrificing any of the experience of drinking espresso.
The resulting E-Coffee makes use of an extremely portable, grabbable and travel-friendly design, with a focus on these nine design elements:
Easy to carry: The E-Coffee was designed with portability in mind, being only about as wide as a travel mug. The lightweight construction makes it a breeze to pick up as well. The cylindrical shape means it fits easily into a bag, suitcase, backpack or vehicle cup holder.
Easy storage: The E-Coffee is small in profile, allowing it to easily be stored when not in active use.
Metal body: The E-Coffee has a durable aluminum alloy exterior, making it well-suited for indoor or outdoor use.
Dual use: With the E-Coffee able to use either traditionally-tamped espresso grounds or espresso pods, the E-Coffee makes great espresso freely accessible to anyone, even those without espresso-making experience.
Built-in Battery: With a robust and long-living 7500 mAh battery, recharges will rarely be needed, allowing for peace of mind that the E-Coffee will be ready to go at a moment's notice when the user is on the go.
Fast heating: With the help of a built-in heating element, room-temperature water is heated to 92 degrees C (197 degrees F) in 2.5 mins, the ideal temperature for brewing coffee.
15-bar extraction: Espresso machines rely on high-pressure extraction to get all essential oils and flavors out of the bean and into your cup for a full-bodied and complete coffee-savoring experience, and the E-Coffee is no different! The 15-20 bar pressure delivered by the machine allows all aromas and flavors to be fully extracted.
Espresso prep kit: The machine also comes with a small prep kit for espresso grounds, which is integrated with and detachable from the unit via a magnet. It includes a tamper for tightly packing down the grounds, as well as a dosing funnel and a needle to break up clumps of grounds.
OLED screen: The E-Coffee's easy-to-read OLED screen offers a clear display and view of the brewing status of your coffee, even in sunlight outdoors.

THE RESULTS
The Kickstarter campaign video was a good one, with UK champion barista Dale Harris showing off the product. There were notably questions from the backers on components such as the specialized coffee cup and espresso basket. There were also a lot of general shipping questions. Overall, backers seemed interested with a lot of questions!
