THE BACKGROUND
Case Study: Ixion Pocket Titanium Pen: Unique faceted pocket pen with titanium construction
Namisu is a UK company that specializes in innovative stationery supplies and writing instruments with stylish designer quality.
Office workers, writers and students today are looking for a trusty, go-to pen that's small and goes anywhere, while also being tough and dependable. With this in mind, Namisu developed the Ixion Pocket Titanium Pen, designed to be durable, stylish, minimalist, and dependable.
Our Approach
The challenge was to design a pen that not only provided the user with the reliability of a fountain or ballpoint writing implement, but also improved on all the drawbacks as well, such as the cost, weight, and thickness (of most fountain pens), or the flimsiness (of most ballpoint pens).
The result is the Ixion Pocket Titanium Pen, which aims to address both of those drawbacks simultaneously at an attractive price. The secret is the strong but lightweight & faceted design, machined from Grade 5 titanium. Namisu developed the pen around six key design elements:
Titanium: Titanium is unmatched for lightweight durability as a construction material, but the cost tends to be too much for most products. However, Namisu is able to mitigate the higher cost by marketing via Kickstarter campaign, therefore eliminating distributors & marketers and their middleman mark-ups.
The Ixion Pocket is durably crafted from solid bars of high-grade titanium, making for a sleek-looking writing implement.
Fountain Pen & Ballpoint Variants: The Ixion Pocket features your choice of either a ballpoint or fountain pen. The fountain variant features an oversized #6 writing nib that guarantees the performance of a full-size pen. The ballpoint variant features a Schmidt 653M refill.
Interchangeable: The Ixion Pocket features optional interchangeable grips, so that you can convert your fountain pen to a ballpoint (or vice versa), which essentially gives you two pens in one. Extra grips can be purchased following the backer survey at the end of the campaign.
Four Finishes: The Ixion Pocket comes in four distinct finishes to the titanium surface- Petrol, Beadblasted, Stonewashed, or Black. The Beadblasted and Stonewashed variants feature bare & natural titanium, while the Black and Petrol finishes use a PVD metal coating.
Nibs: The Ixion Pocket features a Bock 250 Model nib for the fountain pen version, which allows for the writing strength and performance of a full-sized pen in a compact size- Superior to the smaller nibs used in most competing pocket pens.
Leather Sleeves: The Ixion Pocket features a handmade leather sleeve as an add-on, which is crafted from high-quality tanned leather. These can be added on after a Kickstarter backer pledge when the survey is out for an additional £10/ $12.50 / €11.50.
