THE BACKGROUND
Case Study: Firefly: Credit Card Knife & Saw + Built in Firestarter
Grim Workshop is a US company based in Texas that creates highly useful survival tool products that are easy to carry around, yet always made from high-quality materials- sourced and manufactured in the USA.
Knives are essential survival tools while in the great outdoors, yet they aren't always the easiest or most reliable tools to carry around with you. Folding knives can break or rust closed, and if it's a pocket knife the blade may not be large enough for the job you need it to do. Full-sized knives require a sheath which may not fit comfortably on your belt. And you may not be likely to remember to carry a knife with you, especially if it's a full-sized knife you wouldn't normally take places.
Grim Workshop sought to design a high-quality knife that would address all these issues at once! Meet the Firefly.
Our Approach
The challenge was to design a pocketknife that wasn't like ordinary pocket knives that fit only in one's pocket, meaning the user has to remember to put it in their pocket alongside other essentials like car keys and wallet. Rather, Grim Workshop wanted to create a knife that the user would be less likely to forget and would always have on hand, because it fits and stays in the wallet.
The result is the Firefly, which makes use of an innovative U-shape that fits around the hand to create a longer and more useful blade, while also being of credit card shape and size and having wallet-friendly thickness. The Firefly was also designed to be more than just a knife, and was designed around these six key design elements:
Cutting or saw edge: The first option is a razor-sharp cutting edge, perfect for whittling, shaving or even chopping. The second is a full-length saw edge designed for sawing through anything needed in a camping scenario. Your choice!
Ferro rod firestarter: True to its name, each version of Firefly comes with a removeable ferro rod stored under the silicone grip, made for starting fires easily while in the wilderness.
High vis Glowing Grip cover: The silicone grip cover of each Firefly is made to glow in the dark, meaning you'll be able to find your wallet knife easier in the dark.
1/16" thick: This width is ideal for striking a balance between durability and a profile slim enough for fitting comfortably into a wallet.
1095 high-carbon steel: Each version is pre-sharpened, durable, and field-maintainable, so the user can re-sharpen as needed to their liking.
Compact Carry: The Firefly is made to be a standard EDC (everyday carry) item that's easily carried on the person.
